Ok, this is one truly useful site. We have all been there... forgot to take notice of that orange sign about street sweeping only to find a familiar orange parking ticket and the sinking feeling that $60 just left your pocket. Fear no more.... www.sweeparound.us has the solution. The site is so simple yet so necessary we are surprised it took this long. Simply input your email and address and get text or email notices of the upcoming street sweepers visiting your area. How cool is that? And, its totally free! Spread the word... pay the man no more!.
It's that time of year again....annual city inspections. Yes, each year our bed & breakfast undergoes a City of Chicago inspection as a part of our license renewal. The inspection includes and on-site review by the Chicago Fire Department. Fire extinguishers are checked for current year service tags (an outdated yellow inspection tag is a tell tale sign of no recent inspection). Of particular interest are smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Of course each must be in working order. Additionally, fire safety evacuation maps must be posted in each guest room. The Department of Buildings inspects our physical structure for soundness and maintenance to identify issues that could affect public safety. These protections are all part and parcel of staying in a licensed B&B. As yourself if the vacation rental you found on Craigslist or AirBNB affords the same piece of mind. At House 5863, we take your safety seriously and are proud to undergo an annual inspection so that you know we are not only a comfortable but also a safe place to stay in Chicago.
Don't miss your chance to find that one of a kind vintage item or just get some great gardening tips. Next weekend is the Annual Antique & Garden show at the Chicago Botanical Gardens. Brest of all... it's FREE. The event is just a train ride away from our bed & breakfast so come for the show and stay with us!
We love hearing from you. Please continue to send your notes and cards. They are great and we always get a thill from receiving them. Online reviews are okay, but nothing conveys a thought like a good old fashioned letter or card. Thanks again.
Most of us have probably not given it much thought, but what happens to all of our social media accounts when we die? Do you really want that Facebook page or your Google+ to live on in eternity? Some may. Others may want to take control of their digital afterlife and make advance arrangements to dictate what happens to their digital life when they pass on. Google on April 12 too a huge step forward in this regard by offering a new feature it terms Inactive Account Manager. The feature lets the user tell Google what is to be done when their account remains inactive for a specified time. You can choose to have all of your Google related data deleted or a trusted friend notified and given permission to handle your content. This appears to be a big breakthrough in the digital world and will be surely followed by similar policies at other social media outlets.
Ok, you will not find a shop like this any where else in Chicago, or...well, anywhere. Just steps from House 5863 Bed & Breakfast you will find the Wooly Mammoth. This video says it all. Visit the store, its one of out favorites here at House 5863 B&B.
Located within walking distance of our bed and breakfast is a great Chicago dive bar called Edgewater Lounge. The place is a gem. Unexpectedly, you will also find that it has some of the best food around and at bargain prices. Check out this video. Our favorite is the beef brisket sandwich and sweet potato chips. They often have unique and awesome soups that are one of a kind. Oh, and yea, its also a bar with tons of great craft beers on tap and it features live music (no cover!) on Tuesdays. Don't let the outside fool you... stop in and find a true Chicago hangout.
